U.S. Utility Solar Market Grows 34% Since Q2 2023

The U.S. utility-scale solar market has experienced significant growth, driven by the benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). As of Q2 2024, 7,369 MW of solar power was installed—an impressive 49% increase from Q1. According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, the U.S. solar capacity has expanded by 34% compared to the same quarter in 2023, with over 110,000 MW of active projects now generating clean energy.

Developers are expected to install more than 40,292 MW of solar power this year alone. These projects include 3,727 MW recently announced, 14,548 MW in early development, 1,473 MW in advanced development, and 20,543 MW under construction. Looking ahead, nearly 233,000 MW of additional capacity is planned through 2028.

However, despite this robust growth, challenges persist in permitting and interconnection processes. Nick Cohen, CEO of Doral Renewables, explains, “Solar development, particularly for small solar fields, remains difficult in the U.S. due to a complex permitting landscape.” Doral Renewables is currently constructing 1,300 MW of solar at a multiphase project in Indiana. Cohen also pointed out that tariffs have caused project delays and cost escalations, further complicating the landscape for developers.

Rising Solar Demand Amidst Supply Chain Issues

As demand for solar power surges, supply chain disruptions have become a growing concern. According to Woody Rubin, Chief Development Officer for AES Corp.’s U.S. renewables business, managing supply chains effectively has become a competitive advantage. Rubin notes, “We have secured most of the necessary solar panels through 2026, shielding our projects from potential tariff impacts.” AES Corp., like many other developers, is adapting its strategies to maintain momentum despite geopolitical uncertainties and rising costs.

Key Projects and Future Outlook

In the second quarter of 2024, the 10 largest solar projects added 3,062 MW of capacity, with seven projects located in Texas. Notable developments include Hecate Energy’s Frye Solar Project (570 MW) in Texas and the Highland Solar Farm (400 MW) in Ohio, with Amazon contracted for most of the output. Offshore wind giant Ørsted A/S also expanded its solar footprint, completing the Eleven Mile Solar Center (300 MW) in Arizona and the Sparta Solar Plant (250 MW) in Texas.

While the U.S. solar market continues its rapid expansion, experts believe an additional 61 GW of solar capacity is required to meet national clean energy targets. However, McKinsey & Co. reports that current solar pipelines could materialize in time to meet these goals, provided permitting and supply chain challenges are addressed.
