In 2023, the US solar industry witnessed a monumental year of growth, setting new records and reaffirming its status as a leading renewable energy source. The Solar Market Insights report by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Wood Mackenzie highlighted a remarkable 51% year-on-year increase, with 32.4GWdc of solar capacity installed. This growth was seen across all industry segments, with utility-scale installations leading at 22.5GWdc, residential installations reaching a record 6.8GWdc, and commercial installations breaking previous records.

Record-breaking Growth

Every segment of the solar industry experienced significant growth in 2023. Utility-scale installations dominated, while residential and commercial sectors also saw impressive numbers. Despite some policy transitions affecting Q4 residential installations, the overall trend was overwhelmingly positive.

Community Solar Dynamics

Though community solar had a modest 3% growth, states like Maryland and New Jersey showcased impressive adoption rates. However, challenges in mature markets like Massachusetts highlighted the importance of overcoming regulatory hurdles for sustained growth.

Projections for 2024

SEIA and Wood Mackenzie project a continued growth trajectory for solar installations in 2024, with an anticipated 5GWdc increase compared to 2023. However, the residential sector may face a 13% decline due to policy changes in California and economic factors like higher interest rates.

Two prominent solar panel technologies, N-type crystalline silicon and TopCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact), offer distinct advantages. While TopCon panels boast higher efficiency and performance in challenging conditions, they may come with a slightly higher initial cost.

Despite regulatory changes and supply chain disruptions, the resilience and growth of the US solar industry in 2023 were commendable. With ongoing technological advancements and favorable market conditions, solar power is set to play an even more significant role in America’s energy future, steering us towards sustainability and renewable energy reliance.
